Philadelphia’s Mayor Drops a Bombshell: New Arena for the Sixers!
Alright, hoop heads, buckle up! Philly’s got some massive news that’s gonna shake things up. Mayor Cherelle Parker just announced a deal with the 76ers to build a brand-new arena right in Center City. And trust me, this move is a game-changer.
Center City Slam Dunk
So here’s the scoop: Just weeks after New Jersey tried to lure the Sixers to Camden with a whopping $400 million tax break, Philly claps back with their own power play. Mayor Parker proudly declared, “This is an historic agreement,” in a video on X (formerly known as Twitter). She’s confident this deal is a win for everyone in Philadelphia. And to our friends in Chinatown, she’s got your back! Parker promises to support the community as the new arena takes shape just two blocks away.
As your Mayor, I’m speaking from my City Hall office with a very important announcement. I am proud to share that I have made my decision, and an agreement has been reached to ensure that our Sixers are staying home.
I wholeheartedly believe this is the right deal for the People…

76 Place: The Future Home of the Sixers
The new spot, dubbed 76 Place, is set to inject a colossal $1.55 billion into the Market East area. The Sixers’ ownership group, led by Josh Harris, envisions this as more than just a basketball venue. They’re talking about revitalizing the retail corridor near City Hall and leveraging Philly’s public transit system. Oh, and they’re not renewing their lease at Wells Fargo Center, which expires in 2031.
The #Sixers released new architectural renderings of 76 Place — the $1.3 billion arena the team plans to build on Market Street by the year 2031.

Wells Fargo Center: Thanks for the Memories
Built back in ’96, Wells Fargo Center has been the Sixers’ home for decades. But let’s be real, it’s time for an upgrade. The Sixers want a cutting-edge facility they can call their own, one that can host concerts and other events too. In my opinion, it’s about time they moved on from renting space at Comcast Spectacor’s arena, which is also home to the Flyers.
Josh Harris is all about unifying the community with this new project. He’s committed to making sure the new arena strengthens local ties through investments in equity, inclusivity, and accessibility. That’s a tall order, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s Harris and his team.
Next Steps and Final Thoughts
The Sixers’ owners are pumped about Mayor Parker’s support and are eager to move forward with City Council. Meanwhile, Comcast Spectacor’s CEO, Daniel J. Hilferty, says they’re keeping the door open for the Sixers while also working on expanding entertainment options at the South Philly complex. “Either way, we always want what is best for Philadelphia,” Hilferty said.
So, what do you think, Sixers fans? Will this new arena be the spark that ignites Philly’s resurgence? Or is it just another flashy project with big promises? Drop your thoughts below!
