‣ The most Google-searched NBA team in 2023 is the Miami Heat, not the Los Angeles Lakers or New York Knicks as many might assume.
‣ Despite not being the most searched, the Lakers still ranked second among NBA teams in Google searches, with the Golden State Warriors coming in third.
‣ The New York Knicks did not rank in Google’s top-10 most searched teams, challenging the assumption that people are obsessed with big market teams.
As 2023 draws to a close, big companies are dishing out their year-end website data. Folks are busy flaunting their Spotify Wrapped and Apple Replay on social media.
Google isn’t one to be left out of the fun. They’ve been dropping a load of search engine data in the past weeks. This includes sports data. Given this site is all about basketball (obviously), we’re zoning in on those digits.
So, which NBA team tops the Google search list? (Hint: It’s not who you reckon).
You’re in for a shocker. You’re probably thinking, “It’s gotta be the Los Angeles Lakers or the New York Knicks. Who else could it be?” Well, if that’s your thought process, you’re way off the mark. According to Google, the most searched NBA team is the Miami Heat. They come in fifth among all American sports teams, following the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, and Atlanta Braves.
Once the surprise wears off, it kinda makes sense. The Heat might not be in a market as big as LA or New York, but they’re still a big city team. They’ve got popular players like Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. They were in the thick of the Damian Lillard sweepstakes for months and just came off one of the greatest underdog postseason runs in NBA history.
So, what about other NBA teams on Google’s search list? The Lakers, though not first, still made the list. They’re the second most searched NBA team and the eighth most searched among American teams. The Golden State Warriors are the third most searched NBA team and ninth among American sports teams.
Interestingly, the Knicks didn’t make Google’s top-10 in searches. This is despite 2023 being the first time they won a playoff series since 2013. Seems like people aren’t as obsessed with big market teams as you’d think, at least not according to Google.
