The WNBA is coming off perhaps its most buzz-worthy season, and the 2024 postseason kicks off this Sunday.
Aces Prepare to Defend Title:
The Las Vegas Aces, last year’s champions, didn’t secure the top seed this time. With a 27-13 record, they landed at No. 4 and will face a tough first-round opponent in No. 5 Seattle Storm (25-15). Despite the challenge, the Aces have the league’s highest-scoring offense (86.4 PPG) and a solid defense (80.9). MVP favorite A’Ja Wilson leads them with her scoring prowess of 26.9 points per game.
Can Breanna Stewart Get Liberty Over the Championship Hump?
Breanna Stewart won her second MVP award but couldn’t clinch a title for New York in 2023. Her playoff performance was below par, with her second-worst field goal percentage (.358) and lowest points per game average (18.4) in six postseason appearances. This year, she averaged 20.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists during the regular season. The No.1-seeded Liberty (32-8) will face No.8 Atlanta Dream (15-25), who are not seen as much of a threat with their league-low average of 77 points per game.
Fans are really excited to see how Stewart performs this time around.
ROTY Favorite Caitlin Clark Faces Stiff Opening-Round Test
Caitlin Clark had an outstanding rookie season and is now one of the league’s elite players despite being new to it all! She’s expected to win Rookie of the Year honors but faces a tough first playoff series against No.6 Indiana Fever (20-20) versus No.3 Connecticut Sun (28-12). The Sun allowed only 73.6 points per game in 2024—the best defense in the league—and held Clark to just .392 percent shooting across four games.
The Last Dance for Diana Taurasi?
Diana Taurasi might be nearing retirement after an illustrious career as an eleven-time All-Star and three-time WNBA champion; she hinted at hanging up her sneakers soon after Phoenix Mercury’s home finale by saying, “If this is the last time, it felt like the first time.” The Mercury secured the No.7 seed and will face a formidable opponent in No.2 Minnesota Lynx (30-10). If these are indeed Taurasi’s final games, it’s been an incredible journey for her fans
