Kevin Durant, the Phoenix Suns’ star, made a splash in Sunday’s game against the Indiana Pacers. He scored 40 points without a single free throw attempt, a first in his 16-year NBA career. The Suns emerged victorious with a 117-110 win.

Durant’s performance was nothing short of spectacular. Besides his 40 points, he also had nine rebounds, two assists, and three blocks. He was on the court for 41 minutes, shooting 18-of-25 (72%) from the floor and 4-of-7 (57.1%) beyond the arc.

The first half of the game saw Durant score 20 points from 9-of-12 shooting. At 35, Durant is the oldest player to score 40 points in a game without any free throw attempts. He surpasses Hakeem Olajuwan (34) and Rick Barry (33) in this unique record.

According to several NBA betting sites, the Suns have the seventh-shortest odds to win this season’s championship. Interestingly, better odds are being shown for the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder in the West.

A tweet from Ballislife.com celebrated Durant’s achievement. “Kevin Durant is the first Phoenix Sun to score 40 POINTS with ZERO Free Throw attempts!” it read. The tweet also highlighted Durant’s other stats from the game.

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle had a few words about Durant’s performance. “He’s a very unusual problem,” he said. He acknowledged their efforts to counter Durant but praised Durant’s ability to “rise up off the dribble and get complete clearance.”

This game marked Durant’s third 40-point game of the season. The last time he closed out a game without attempting a free throw was during the Brooklyn Nets‘ 112-98 victory against the Toronto Raptors on Nov. 23, 2022.

The NBA record for most points scored in a single game with zero free throw attempts is held by Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray. In a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Feb. 19, 2021, he scored a career-high 50 points.

Durant’s shooting from the 3-point range has been exceptional this season, with a career-best of 47%. This ranks him fourth in the NBA this season.

The Suns’ Big 3, comprising of Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, is becoming increasingly difficult for teams to handle. In the game against Indiana, Booker scored 26 points and Beal finished with 25.

In fact, it was the second consecutive game where the All-Star trio combined for 91 points. The Suns led 65-61 at halftime and outscored the Pacers 64-48 in the paint. Booker commented on their performance, stating, “It’s the definition of pick your poison.”

The Suns led by as many as 14 points in the game and shot 47-of-82 (57.3%) from the field. Durant’s season averages are impressive, with 29.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.2 blocks, and 37 minutes per game.

Durant’s shooting percentages are also noteworthy. He’s shooting 53.2% from the floor, a career-best 47% from 3-point range, and 88.3% at the foul line. In terms of NBA rankings, Durant is 12th in points, fourth in 3-point percentage, 19th in true shooting percentage, 11th in free throws, eighth in player efficiency rating, and ninth in box plus/minus.
