Alright, hoop heads, buckle up! This one’s gonna be a ride.
Josh Giddey’s Road to Recovery
So, Josh Giddey messed up his ankle big time during the Paris Olympics. Yeah, he tore a ligament, and it was ugly. But hey, the dude’s been grinding through rehab and is now eyeing a comeback just in time for the NBA season opener with the Bulls.
From Down Under to Chi-Town
Giddey’s injury happened in a brutal game against Serbia. Picture this: he rolls his ankle, tries to tough it out, but the Boomers blow a 24-point lead and lose 95-90. Ouch. After that heartbreak, he flew back to Melbourne, got some scans done, and found out he’d really messed up his anterior talofibular ligament. Fast forward a couple of months, and he’s almost done with rehab.
Bulls’ Bold Move: Giddey In, Caruso Out
The Bulls made a gutsy call trading Alex Caruso for Josh Giddey. Some say they downgraded their defense, but I think there’s more to it. Billy Donovan even hinted that this roster might struggle to cover its defensive gaps. Check out what the Chicago Tribune Sports had to say:
The Bulls made a calculated decision that downgraded their defense when they traded Alex Caruso for Josh Giddey.

Giddey himself is optimistic. “(The ankle) is getting better, it’s getting to the point where I’m almost back out there,” he said during media day. He’s targeting the Bulls’ first game against the Pelicans on October 24. “It’s probably at a point where if it was a play-off game I’d be out there playing but because we’re in the off-season, this isn’t something that you want to rush,” he added.
Heartbreak in Paris
Australia’s Olympic run didn’t end well, and Giddey’s still feeling it. Losing to Serbia hit him hard. “That was a game that sat with me for weeks after it happened. It was probably for me the most heartbreaking loss of my career,” he admitted. They had every chance to win and move on to the semis, but it just didn’t happen.
Filling Caruso’s Shoes
Giddey’s known for his court vision and passing, but now he’s gotta step up on defense too. Caruso was a beast on the perimeter, and Giddey knows he’s got work to do. “I had a lot of conversations with Mark (Daigneault, Thunder coach) when I was in Oklahoma and there comes a point in a player’s career when the fork is put in the road with where you’re at defensively,” he said.
Now in Chicago, Giddey’s ready to lead. “You don’t want to get to a point in your career where you’re known as the weak link on that end of the floor,” he pointed out. The kid’s got potential, no doubt. His stats from OKC—13.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game over 210 games—show he’s got game. But can he replace Caruso’s defensive prowess? Only time will tell.
So, what do you think? Can Giddey step up and make the Bulls a contender, or will they miss Caruso’s lockdown D? Let’s hear your takes!
