The Charlotte Hornets have chosen not to exercise their team option on James Bouknight’s contract for the 2024-25 season, making him an unrestricted free agent next summer. Bouknight, a 6-foot-4 guard, was drafted 11th overall by the Hornets in the 2021 NBA Draft out of UConn. In his rookie season, he appeared in 31 games off the bench and averaged 4.6 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 9.8 minutes per game.

Despite Bouknight’s potential, injuries have been a recurring issue throughout his young career. He missed the 2022 Summer League due to wrist surgery and has dealt with hand, neck, and meniscus injuries in his first two seasons. Earlier this month, he underwent arthroscopic surgery for a meniscus injury in his left knee.

Hornets coach Steve Clifford has expressed his belief in Bouknight’s talent, stating, “He’s got real talent, like starter’s talent.” However, he also acknowledged that it takes time for most players to adjust and perform well in the league. Despite Bouknight’s struggles and limited playing time so far, the Hornets have seen enough potential to exercise his club option for the 2023-24 season.

The decision not to pick up Bouknight’s option for the 2024-25 season comes as the Hornets face long odds to win the 2024 championship. Several NBA betting sites rank them 30th in the league, with better odds given to teams like the Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls, and Indiana Pacers. The Hornets’ focus may be on reshaping their roster to improve their chances in the future.
