Gary Payton Secures College Basketball Head-Coaching Role

Coach Glove is officially getting another go at it.

The College of Alameda announced on Saturday that Gary Payton will be the new head coach for their men’s basketball team. The junior college is located on an island in Alameda, California.

Gary Payton’s NBA Legacy:

Payton, now 56, hails from the Bay Area and had a stellar NBA career from 1990 to 2007. He mainly played for the Seattle SuperSonics but also spent time with four other teams. Known for his tough defense, he was a nine-time NBA All-Star and made nine All-Defensive teams. He also earned seven All-NBA honors and won an NBA championship with the Miami Heat in 2006. In 2013, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

Coaching Journey:

After retiring from playing, Payton gained coaching experience at various levels. Since 2017, he has been a head coach in the BIG3 league and recently won Coach of the Year after leading his Bivouac team to a title this season. For the past three years, he served as head coach at Lincoln University in Oakland, California.

Fans think it’s cool how he’s taking on new challenges!

New Challenges Ahead:

Earlier this year, Payton left Lincoln University due to reported financial disagreements with the school. Now he’s stepping into another tough role; Alameda’s men’s basketball team had a rough season last year with a record of 7-21 in the Bay Valley Conference. But Payton seems eager for this fresh challenge as head coach—a surprising twist for someone who once said they wanted to “kill” their own head coach!
