The Hawks are one of the teams expected to be active in the market before the February 8 trade deadline. Dejounte Murray is the name that’s been floating around in most transfer speculations. Since drafting Trae Young in 2018, the Atlanta franchise has had a tough time building a winning roster around him.

Recently, four-time All-Star DeMarcus Cousins shared his thoughts on the Hawks’ situation on the Bully Ball podcast. The former NBA big man believes Trae should get out of Atlanta as soon as possible.

Cousins, who’s 33, advised, “If I’m Trae Young, I’d get ahead of the curve.” He fears Trae might stay too long and end up being blamed for the team’s failures. He warned, “The situation I’m afraid of with Trae Young is that he will remain there too long, and all of a sudden, he becomes the villain; he’s the scapegoat.”

Cousins knows what he’s talking about. He’s been there. He’s seen how organizations work. When things start to crumble, the blame game begins. First, it’s the coach. Then, it’s the players. Cousins insists, “If I’m Trae Young, I’m getting out as soon as I can.”

Young is in his sixth season with the Hawks. He’s been part of three playoff runs but only made it past the first round once. Experts believe the team’s inability to acquire talent that complements Trae’s game has been the main issue.

This NBA season, the 25-year-old has averaged 27.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 10.9 assists. He’s shooting 42.2% from field goal attempts and 36.3% from beyond the arc. The Hawks are reportedly trying to trade Dejounte Murray, who’s caught the interest of many franchises.

“The Hawks have come to the realization that the pairing of Murray and two-time NBA All-Star Trae Young isn’t working,” says insider Marc J. Spears. The Hawks are exploring trading Murray, who’s attracting attention due to his performance, image, and manageable contract.

Murray reportedly wants to join a team with a shot at an immediate playoff run. NBA insider Kevin O’Connor reported this week that Dejounte wishes to join a squad with a chance to make an immediate playoff run. The Hawks are asking for two firsts in return for Murray, but no one has met their demands yet.

Several teams, including the San Antonio Spurs, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors, and Detroit Pistons, have shown interest in Murray. The player is earning $17.7 million this season.

“I tell several people who I stand for as a person,” says Murray. “That is who Dejounte Murray is. As a man or person, however you want to put it, it’s not appropriate for me to talk about that or let that get in the way for my teammates. I love my teammates. My teammates love me. I’m not a GM, owner, an agent, none of those things. I’m a basketball player. I’m a hooper. So, I continue to learn, lead and work hard.”
