Devin Booker, the star of the Phoenix Suns, was on fire in the first quarter of Friday’s game. He netted 29 points against the Indiana Pacers, which is a feat only 11 other NBA players have achieved since the 1996-97 season.

The Suns outpaced the Pacers 40-31 in the first period. Booker, who’s 27, didn’t stop there. He ended the game with a season-high 62 points, five rebounds, four assists, one steal, and two blocks. All this in 39 minutes of play.

Booker’s been in the NBA for nine years. His shooting stats for the game were impressive: 22-of-37 (59.5%) from the field, 6-of-12 (50%) from the 3-point line, and 12-of-13 (92.3%) at the free-throw line. This season, he’s had four 20-point quarters, the most in the NBA.

And get this: all four of those quarters happened in the last eight days.

But, the Suns didn’t win. They were outscored 84-58 in the paint and 28-17 in the final period. They lost a 17-point lead and the turnover battle. The Pacers shot 58-of-109 (53.2%) from the floor.

Booker said, “Those are the shots I’ve been taking all season. We’ve got some things to figure out, especially on the defensive end.” He’s scored 50 or more points twice this season and seven times in his career. His career-high is 70 points in a game against Boston on March 24, 2017. On Jan. 19, he scored 52 against New Orleans.

This season, Booker is averaging career highs of 28.2 points, 7.4 assists per game. It’s the first time since 1977-78 that two or more players have scored at least 60 points in a loss. Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves scored 62 in a 128-125 loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Monday.

George Gervin (63 points) and David Thompson (73 points) are the only other players to lose a game where they scored 60 or more points. Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors holds the all-time record for the most points scored in a single quarter. He scored 37 points in the third quarter of a 126-101 win over the Sacramento Kings on Jan. 23, 2015.

In addition to Thompson, Kevin Love, Carmelo Anthony, Towns, and Kobe Bryant have all scored at least 30 points in a quarter. Six other players have scored 29 points in a quarter: Joel Embiid, James Harden, Brandon Jennings, Joe Johnson, Dirk Nowitzki, and Isaiah Thomas.

Booker’s been starting a lot this season, 36 times to be exact. He’s averaging career highs of 28.2 points, 7.4 assists, and 36.1 minutes per game. He’s shooting career bests of 49.9% from the field and 38.8% from downtown.

According to NBA betting sites, Booker has the eighth-best odds to win MVP this season. Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Jayson Tatum have better odds, according to sportsbooks.
