LeBron James, the star of the Los Angeles Lakers, is making headlines again. Alongside him, two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks is also in the spotlight. They’re leading the pack in the first round of fan voting for the 2024 NBA All-Star Game. This isn’t just any All-Star Game, though. It’s the 73rd in NBA history.

Antetokounmpo isn’t just leading; he’s crushing it. He’s racked up 2,171,812 votes, making him the frontrunner among all Eastern Conference frontcourt players. But let’s not forget about James. He’s leading the Western Conference frontcourt with a cool 2,008,645 votes.

So, who will be the captains? The All-Star starter from each conference with the most fan votes, that’s who. And, yep, you guessed it. Right now, that’s LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

According to a tweet from NBA Communications, these two are leading their respective conferences in the first fan returns. They’re the #NBAAllStar Voting favorites, presented by AT&T. But fans only account for 50% of the vote. NBA players and a media panel each account for 25%.

The next fan update? That’s coming on 1/11. Keep your eyes peeled.

Fan voting is a big deal. It makes up 50% of the formula used to select the All-Star starters. The rest? That’s split between media voting (25%) and voting by NBA players (the remaining 25%).

This year, the NBA is going old school. They’re reverting to the classic East vs. West format for the All-Star Game. This format was last used in 2017. Each starting lineup will have three frontcourt players and two guards.

In case you’re wondering, the West frontcourt leaders are James, Phoenix’s Kevin Durant, and Denver’s Nikola Jokic. The East frontcourt leaders? That would be Antetokounmpo, Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid, and Boston’s Jayson Tatum.

And the guard leaders? In the West, it’s Dallas’ Luka Doncic and Golden State’s Stephen Curry. In the East, it’s Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton and Milwaukee’s Damian Lillard.

LeBron James is on track to make history. The 39-year-old is set to earn an NBA-record 20th All-Star selection. He’s currently tied with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most in league history with 19.

The 2024 NBA All-Star Game is set for Sunday, Feb. 18 in Indianapolis at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Fan voting continues through Jan. 20. Coaches will then choose the reserves for both rosters.

This isn’t the first time Indianapolis has hosted the All-Star Game. The city last hosted the event back in 1985 at the Hoosier Dome.

The 24-point Elam Ending that was first used in 2020 has been axed for this year’s All-Star Game. However, the team that scores the most points in each quarter will still win a cash prize for a selected charity.

The 2024 NBA All-Star Game will feature the traditional scoring system with four 12-minute quarters. All-Star Saturday Night will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts.
